THE Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB) pledged yesterday to investigate claims that some of the country's stores have been refusing to accept the Saudi riyal as legal tender.
The GDN reported yesterday that some shops were declining to accept the currency, amid fears about its value during the global credit crunch.
Notices have also gone up in some stores stating that customers paying with Saudi riyals will only get 900fils for every 10 riyal, compared to the BD1 offered before.
Some consumers reported that they had been offered as little as 800fils for a 10 Saudi riyal note.
One Manama money exchange company confirmed it had received complaints from customers that the money they had exchanged was not being accepted in some stores.
Officials said the problem emerged after some banks in Saudi Arabia bought riyals at a lower rate than the market rate.
"The CBB does not condone irresponsible actions taken by any business or organisation to turn down riyal or exchanging it at a lower rate against the market rates," it said in a statement.
The rate issued by the CBB yesterday stood at 0.10075 - meaning BD1 was worth 10 Saudi riyals.
Customers who have specific complaints about the issue are asked to contact the bank's compliance directorate on 17547956, fax 17535673 or e-mail
